| Medical teachers go on indefinite strike |

| Medical teachers affiliated to Baroda Medical College and Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) Medical College here began their indefinite strike on Thursday. Almost all teaching staff members, many of whom also provide treatment to patients, have stopped working following the strike call given by Gujarat Medical Teachers Association (GMTA).
GMTA had given the strike call over pay anomalies and disparities alleging that their demands were not met despite repeated representations to the state government. Earlier, the medical teachers had gone on a one-day mass casual leave in August 2011.
Vadodara GMTA secretary and M S University syndicate member Dr Beejaysinh Rathod said the strike was near total across the state barring some exceptions. He said there was no word from the state government on their demands yet and the strike would continue.
The demands include University Grants Commission (UGC) scales on lines with arts, science, commerce and engineering colleges. The doctors have also raised the issue of pay ceiling to the level of central government employees which was Rs 85,000 as against Rs 75,000 to medical teachers. They are also seeking time bound higher scale payment and promotions as per Tikku Commission recommendations.
The SSG Hospital to which the Baroda Medical College is affiliated had to rely on services of resident doctors and doctors deputed from government hospitals near the city. |
